Gas Prices See Increase in Japan and South Korea

Japanese gas companies are raising prices for gas products in December. On December 25, AirWater issued a notice announcing price adjustments for industrial and medical gases.

The price of helium has been raised by 10-20% or more, while the prices for liquid carbon dioxide/dry ice have increased by over 20-30%. Gas-related products have seen a price hike of more than 15%. All price adjustments will take effect on January 1, 2025.

The announcement states that to ensure a stable supply of helium, the company is diversifying its procurement sources (from North America and the Middle East) and expanding facilities. Additionally, the company is working to strengthen its supply chain for industries such as electronics, healthcare, and aerospace. Since July 2022, global supply-demand imbalances and a significant rise in energy costs have led to adjustments in ammonia gas prices, causing ongoing increases in procurement, manufacturing, and logistics costs. As a result, to maintain a stable supply of helium gas, the company has decided to implement a price adjustment.

In addition to AirWater, Japanese gas companies Iwatani Corporation and Taiyo Nippon Sanso have also recently announced price hikes for certain gas products.

On the 13th, Iwatani Corporation announced that starting in January 2025, it will increase the prices of industrial gases such as carbon dioxide, helium, and dry ice by 15% to 25%. The price increases are attributed to the rising costs of raw material procurement and logistics.

On December 9, Taiyo Nippon Sanso released an announcement stating that, starting in February 2025, it will increase the ex-factory prices of ammonia-related products (such as bottled ammonia, liquid ammonia cylinders, ammonia tube bundles, liquid ammonia Dewar flasks, helium mixtures, and specialty gases) by an average of over 20%.

The company explained that the rising raw material costs for helium can no longer be absorbed through internal efforts, and it has become increasingly difficult to maintain previous prices. As a result, Taiyo Nippon Sanso has decided to revise its prices again.

Additionally, according to related reports from South Korean media in December, retail prices for industrial gases, including acetylene, oxygen, nitrogen, and argon (industrial high-pressure gases), are expected to rise significantly starting from the end of 2024 or early 2025.
