Process

1.Chlorohydrination: First pass ethylene and chlorine gas into water to generate 2-chloroethanol, and then react alkali (usually milk of lime) with 2-chloroethanol to generate ethylene oxide.2.Oxidation: Using air or oxygen with a concentration of more than 95% (volume) as the oxidant, ethylene oxide is prepared through three processes of reaction, ethylene oxide recovery and ethylene oxide refining. The monthly filling output of Jinhong ethylene oxide liquefied gas (100% pure EO, EO:CO2 mixed gas) for cylinder sterilization is over 200 tons.

Applications

Medical

Ethylene oxide has a bactericidal effect, does not corrode metals, has no residual odor, and can kill bacteria (and its endospores), mold and fungi, so it can be used to sterilize some items that cannot withstand high temperature sterilization and gas bactericides for materials. Ethylene oxide is widely used to disinfect medical supplies such as bandages, sutures, and surgical instruments.

Food Storage

Fumigants for ethylene oxide are often used in the preservation of grains and foods.

Chemical Synthesis

Ethylene oxide is mainly used in the manufacture of ethylene glycol (raw material for polyester fiber), synthetic detergents, nonionic surfactants, antifreeze agents, emulsifiers and ethylene glycol products, as well as in the production of plasticizers, lubricants, rubber and plastics, etc. It is widely used in washing and dyeing, electronics, medicine, pesticides, textiles, papermaking, automobiles, oil exploration and refining and many other fields.

What are the Ethylene Oxide Uses?

Ethylene oxide is a broad-spectrum, high-efficiency gas bactericidal disinfectant. It has strong penetrating power to disinfected items, can reach the deep part of the items, and can kill several pathogenic microorganisms. Both gas and liquid have a strong antimicrobial effect. Because the gas has a strong effect, it is often used for disinfection.

What are the dangers of ethylene oxide?

Ethylene oxide is a gas disinfectant that is highly toxic to the human body and can cause poisoning reactions in humans. Long-term exposure to a small amount will cause neurasthenia syndrome and autonomic dysfunction.

What are the hazards of Ethylene Oxide to the environment?

EO is chemically active and can undergo secondary transformation in the environment. Its photochemical reaction will cause urban photochemical smog and cause secondary pollution. In addition, because of its high toxicity and secondary environmental hazards, it is included in the list of toxic and harmful volatile organic compounds for air pollution control by countries all over the world.
