Trifluoromethane

Trifluoromethane is a colorless, non-flammable gas with a boiling point of -82.1°C.
It is generally used as a low temperature refrigerant and as a fire extinguishing agent and as a raw material for the manufacture of tetrafluoroethylene.

Process

The commercial production of trifluoromethane is carried out by reaction of chloroform with hydrogen fluoride over a chromium catalyst.
